Sermons and Notes

It is my practice to preach expositionally through books of the Bible. I provide an insert for the Order of Worship with the sermon's text, notes, and a devotional guide for the week called Taking Gathered Worship Home. I try to balance the types of books throughout the years not only between Old and New Testament, but also the different genres: Narrative, Prophecy, Gospels, Epistle, Wisdom, Poetry, etc.  During the past sixteen years I have preached through 34 of the 66 books of the Bible. At times I preach on a topic such as Advent or our church's mission statement, but always it is biblically based and proclaiming the good news of what the Father has promised, Christ has accomplished, and the Spirit has applied.

Organized as the Lord's Army

Numbers 1:1-19

God has prepared the Promised Land for Israel as an inheritance where they are to dwell together with Him in their midst, enjoying unprecedented intimacy and delight. While the first generation brought up out of Egypt failed to trust Him and so died in the wilderness, they are to press on in faith and obey His Word in every regard so they will live in His blessing.

Gospel Brothers

Philippians 2:19-30

Christ has not only saved His people, He has brought us into His family. That makes us His siblings. It also makes us related to one another. This passage teaches us what it means to live together in Christ's family. It also shows us how we are to emulate and honor our faithful brothers. Let us together celebrate our inheritance even in the midst of suffering.

The Coming True Temple

Advent--John 2:13-22; 1 Peter 2:4-12

Jesus came to fulfill all that the Temple pointed forward to and promised to God's people. He accomplished it all. Now He is building us up as His Body--a living temple. Just as surely as He came faithfully fulfilling His promise of old, so too will He complete the Temple when He returns.

Mission--Growing in Christ

Acts 2:42-47; Ephesians 4:11-16

Our calling is a collective calling. Jesus did not just call us as individuals, but as His people TOGETHER. This calling defines our mission to live in community as those who are growing together in Christ. Not only can we not do this without Christ, we can't do it without one another.

Singing the Songs of Marital Love
Song of Songs 1:9-2:7

In a day and age where there is such confusion about sexuality why is there so little preaching on the book of the Bible that is devoted to God's design for righteous passion? We are supposed to be delighted with one another in the marriage bed, but sin distorts what God intended for good. Similarly, marriage is a picture of our relationship with Christ and just as husband and wife must guard their hearts, so too do we need to grow in our affection for Christ.

The King Is Risen!
Mark 16:1-8

Easter sermon showing contrast in the text between Religion (the stinky stuff we do to feel better) and Christianity as victorious brokenness.
